Herbal Realm: The Ba Lou Pharmacopoeia
by 清风辰辰
Deep in the Ba Lou Mountains of western Henan lies the isolated Medicine King Valley, where no grain grows but human lives are cultivated. Each of the hundred villagers has a fate tied to a specific medicinal herb. The ancient Book of Life and Death of Herbs dictates that herb names are destiny, binding the villagers' joys and sorrows. A century-long drought strikes, cracking the earth and drying wells. Village Party Secretary Xue Jian, seeking to save his dying son Ban Xia, ventures into the forbidden Cliff of No Return and obtains the herb Xue Jian Cao, gaining the ability to hear herbs' cries and understand fate. Outsider Qing Dai arrives, bringing worldly desires that shatter the village's peace. Bai Zhi is pure, Du Huo lonely, Wang You mad, Dang Gui homeless—a hundred herbs, a hundred absurd and fiery human fates. Greed, clan conflicts, and demolition upheavals follow, turning the simple village into a magical battlefield. Struggles between holding on and sinking, fleeing and returning, see the masses tossed in fame and suffering. Herbs grow wild, hearts lose measure. A rustic elegy spanning eras slowly ends, as the broken village completes its fateful shedding and rebirth in the wind and snow.
