Before Dawn in Harbin

In August 1945, after Japan's unconditional surrender, the Soviet Red Army entered Harbin in Northeast China, a city untouched by either the Nationalist or Communist parties. The Nationalist government sent Wang Yaozu, a high-ranking official, to Harbin to join the local Military Intelligence Bureau for intelligence gathering and preparation for full occupation, while also plundering wealth. The Communist Party dispatched intelligence agents Tang Xiaoning and her assistant Kang Daqing to Harbin. Under the leadership of the underground Harbin Municipal Committee, they delved into enemy intelligence and studied the situation of all parties. A covert struggle quietly unfolded. Tang Xiaoning, daughter of a wealthy Harbin family, used her advantage to persuade her father to sell off the family assets and donate all proceeds to the Northeast Democratic Allied Army, solving the newly established army's supply problems. Wang Yaozu, harboring deep hatred for Tang Xiaoning, repeatedly colluded with gangsters to assassinate her, but she thwarted every attempt. Wang also ordered the kidnapping of Tang's father, Tang Renjie, but she successfully rescued him. Desperate for revenge, Wang defected to Japanese sleeper agent Kofuji Yoshihiko for a final gamble. Harbin was the site of the Japanese Kwantung Army's Unit 731, which had hidden a large number of biological weapons. They used these weapons to cause casualties, but were ultimately wiped out by Tang Xiaoning, Kang Daqing, and the police.
