This novel is not based on real history and should be treated with caution. In 1900, the Boxer Rebellion occurred. The Eight-Nation Alliance captured Beijing, and Empress Dowager Cixi fled westward with Emperor Guangxu. Provincial governors in the south signed the Southeast Protection Agreement with foreign powers, rendering the Qing court's authority nominal. Guangxi, located in the southwestern border region, was plagued by remnants of the Tiandihui, rampant bandits, and corrupt and incompetent officials. French influence extended into Yunnan and Guangxi, coveting the two provinces. At this turning point between old and new, it was the perfect time for heroes to rise.
