Homecoming Taboo
by 烛龙斋
Lin Du receives a call from his hometown: his grandmother has passed away. He rushes back for the funeral after seven years away, but at the village entrance he sees a yellowed notice — "Notice to Outsiders:" 1. Do not go out after dark. 2. If you hear someone call your name, do not turn around. 3. Not a single lamp in the ancestral hall may go out. 4. You must leave the village before midnight on the 14th day of the seventh lunar month. Lin Du sneers, tears down the notice, and steps into the village. That night, he witnesses his neighbor Uncle Wang peeling off his own face in the moonlight, revealing a stranger's face underneath. Even more bizarrely — his grandmother's coffin is empty. And everyone in the village says the same thing to him: "Welcome home, Lin Du. You've finally returned." — Description from novelcodex.org
