After a long period of peace in the Great Jing dynasty, the death of Emperor Renzong left a young ruler on the throne. The regent Yu Liang, an external relative, insisted on hastily reducing the military power of the feudal lords, ignoring the remonstrance of the important minister Li Junyi, which provoked the rebellion of the Xie family, the feudal lord of Jiangzhou.
