Borrowing White Grass
by 宋三宝
Borrowing White Grass is a novel set in the Xingyue Coal Mine of the Taiyue Mining Bureau in Shanxi. The story begins with the fates of three miner families: Wang Laihu takes care of the widow Xiulan after the death of the team leader; Zhang Chongde meets the widowed Xiao'ai at the gun-mud room on the southern slope of the gangue hill; Longlong, dragging his crippled leg, gestures and tells about safety in front of the dispatch room—their marriages and childbearing form the "roots" of the first generation in the mining area. And on these roots grow the power games and desire exchanges of the second generation: Zhang Zeshun transforms from a betrayed husband into a mine director who possesses women through power and consolidates power through women; Zhang Yunlong, from a penniless graduate of Yongji Mining College, becomes a "chief steward" who offers his wife and trades well-trained women for career advancement; Yang Shansheng, Hong Yu'er, Kong Lingxian... each in their own way burns themselves and those around them like firewood to warm this mine. — Description from novelcodex.org
