The Old City Shall Not Be Erased
by 潘成伟
At midnight, an old street in Linlan City that had existed for decades vanished into thin air. Over four hundred meters of road, twenty-seven households, along with all records in maps and archives, were completely wiped out overnight. Everyone said that there had only ever been a patch of green space there. Only road surveyor Cheng Duheng remembered. That night, using three discarded survey nails, he forcibly connected a road that no longer existed and rescued seventeen people from the vanished block. And it was from that day on that he saw another map hidden beneath the city. There were severed streets, buildings that had been missing for years, and people who should not have appeared in this era. Then a list called the Boundary Withdrawal Plan surfaced. Hospitals, bridges, schools, residential areas... The final item was actually the entire city of Linlan. And Cheng Duheng's father, missing for many years, seemed to have known about all of this long ago. When a city can be arbitrarily deregistered, who has the right to decide the fate of millions of people? Cheng Duheng did not know the answer. But he knew one thing. When the road breaks, someone has to reconnect it. — Description from novelcodex.org
