The Life of Zhang Daoling
by 梁行
During the Eastern Han dynasty, the Celestial Master Zhang Daoling entered Shu to cultivate the Way. At Mount Qingcheng he refined the divine elixir and established the Daoist teachings, becoming the founding patriarch of the Zhengyi school of Daoism. At that time, the region around Mount Qingcheng was already occupied by numerous demons and malevolent spirits, who harmed the local people and interfered with Daoist cultivation. The Six Great Demon Kings were the strongest leaders among them. These six demon kings were the chieftains of spirits left over from ancient times, each commanding a host of demons from one quarter and occupying the mountain caves and deep pools of Mount Qingcheng as their lairs. They stirred up trouble in the region, injured people and livestock, and destroyed local sacrificial and livelihood facilities; they were fierce deities long feared by the early peoples of Shu. The Celestial Master Zhang set up an altar on Mount Qingcheng and cast his spells, entering into a contest of magic with the Six Great Demon Kings. With supreme Daoist power he broke their demonic arts and finally sealed and suppressed them. Legend says the sealing deep pool lies in the core area of Mount Qingcheng, and later generations also called it the "Ghost Pool" and the "Demon-Subduing Pool"; it is a landmark site in local Daoist legend. This story is one of the core tales of Mount Qingcheng's Daoist culture, and it directly established the mountain's sacred status as a famous Daoist mountain for "subduing demons and sweeping away impurity." — Description from novelcodex.org
