The Muster Roll

On the day of the roll call, he answered "Present." But the real "Han Shun" had been dead for three years. Chen Xiaoyi, a refugee, assumed the identity of his deceased fellow townsman and infiltrated the Song dynasty's Xiang Army, just to collect that monthly ration of grain and support his fellow townsman's blind sister, A Yuan. He thought that as long as he was careful enough, he could keep up the pretense. But he didn't know that the Great Song's military registration documents were more rigid than human life itself. The probing of his fellow soldiers, the inspections by the prefectural office, the time lag in the reply from his original hometown... every roll call was a life-or-death gamble. If he was discovered to be an impostor, not only would he be beheaded, but even his blind sister would be implicated. He had no system, knew no martial arts, and understood nothing of court politics. Facing the schemes of corrupt officials who embezzled pay and veteran soldiers, he could only stubbornly exploit the rotten rules and regulations. Using the time lags in documents, the deadlines, and the collective punishment laws, he carved out a path to survival in a hopeless situation! Because only by keeping a dead man's name legally alive could he live, and his sister live. — Description from novelcodex.orgFull novel: The Muster Roll — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org
