Magic is real. The research standards are appalling. Before I woke up as a ten-year-old noble boy, I was a biologist. Now I live in a world that has spent centuries learning to wield magic without asking nearly enough questions about what it is or why it works. I intend to find out what they missed. Given enough time, careful observation, and a few controlled experiments, I could happily devote my second life to the problem. Unfortunately, women outnumber men four to one, society is firmly matriarchal, and rare noble boys are not left entirely to themselves. Nor can the questions I have be answered from behind a desk. Proper research requires a broader sample: better libraries, magical fauna from different environments, and regions where magic refuses to behave as expected. I plan to understand magic.
