Glitched Awakening: The Awakening

by NoNamedGuy

Nathan Gold thought Awakening late would be the best thing to happen to him that week. Then he tried to use his new spatial ability. Instead of taking a knife out of a mugger's hand, Nathan finds himself staring through the eyes of Evelyn Vale—eighteen-year-old heiress to one of Arc City's most powerful families—while Evelyn is left standing in his body. Getting themselves back to normal should be the obvious priority. Unfortunately, Evelyn has problems of her own. Someone powerful enough to bypass her security wants her dead, her family is tearing itself apart from within, and Nathan's supposedly spatial Awakening appears to have developed a glitch that neither of them understands. Until they can control it, Nathan will have to learn what it means to live in someone else's body, wear someone else's identity, and occasionally discover that returning to normal is considerably more complicated than simply wanting his old life back. Glitched Awakening is a body-swapping progression fantasy focused on the practical, personal, embarrassing, intimate, and occasionally absurd consequences of actually having to live as someone else—not simply switching bodies for a scene and forgetting about it afterward. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've enjoyed body-swap stories for a long time, but I kept running into the problem that I could rarely find exactly the kind I wanted to read. I wasn't really looking for a story about a protagonist questioning his gender or discovering that he would rather be someone else—not because there's anything wrong with those stories, but because that wasn't the particular experience I was interested in writing. I wanted a protagonist who was quite comfortable being himself, knew perfectly well that he was Nathan Gold, and then had to deal with the absurd consequences of suddenly waking up in somebody else's body and being expected to live part of her life. More than anything, I wanted the swap itself to matter. I wanted him to have to deal with clothes, hygiene, different senses, different physical reactions, other people's expectations, work, relationships, attraction, embarrassment, and all those little things that tend to disappear once a body-swap story gets past the initial joke. I wanted him to actually live in those bodies rather than simply borrow them for a scene. And, admittedly, I also thought it would be very funny to keep putting Nathan into increasingly miserable situations and watch him figure out how to survive them. Eventually I realized that if I couldn't find quite the story I wanted, I might as well write it myself.
