Handbook of Different Cooking Techniques

Lin Jing inherited an estate from a distant uncle he had never met. The inheritance consisted primarily of a modest sum of money, a two-bedroom apartment in an old residential neighborhood, and a collection of furniture that came with the apartment and was mysteriously decaying at an astonishing rate. His uncle had died inside the apartment, and the cause of death remained unknown. However, Lin Jing did not particularly care. After all, he was poor. He gave up his cramped rental room and moved into the apartment. Even when he discovered countless gray patches of mold covering the walls, he considered it perfectly normal. After all, the pipes upstairs leaked frequently. The old electrical appliances, their outer casings oxidized and yellowed with age, made strange noises. That did not surprise him either. They had all been in use for more than ten years and were barely hanging on. As for the moving green slime crawling over the corners of the wardrobe and the edges of the desk… Well, all right. Those things were definitely not normal, but he supposed he could still tolerate them. And so, the impoverished Lin Jing settled into his slightly peculiar new home. That was until one day, when he opened the old refrigerator and discovered a lump of something resembling butter inside. It looked as though it were on the verge of melting, and its shape was slowly changing right before his eyes. Lin Jing stared intently at the lump of “butter” for ten seconds before swallowing and saying, “I want to make some pan-fried potatoes with butter.” “Can you eat this?” 1\.
