I am a dragon. It’s not unreasonable to ask for a ninth-rank Title, is it?

by 云霄桂月

Yuan Rutang was the last dragon of the primordial age. After he hatched, the mortal world had already changed, seas had turned into mulberry fields. Out of caution, Yuan Rutang disguised himself as a human. For more than a decade, he lived as one, growing from a baby into a handsome young man. But now he couldn’t keep pretending anymore. What kind of miserable life was this? The village head bullied him, clans banded together against him, officials were heartless, and the county magistrate was corrupt beyond measure… Furious and fed up, Yuan Rutang finally realized there was nothing in the human world that could threaten him. So he revealed his true form and flew straight to the capital to demand justice from the human emperor himself! —– Emperor Fu Chui had seized the throne through illegitimate means, and the old ministers never missed a chance to scold him. With every insult, Fu Chui answered with blood, executing his detractors one after another. He thought that if he devoted himself to being a good emperor, the noise around him would eventually fade. Yet seven years after his ascension, disasters struck year after year. With calamities in the sky and famine on earth, public resentment grew louder and louder. The officials joined forces, forcing him to write a self-condemnation edict. Exhausted and hollow-eyed, Fu Chui silently agreed. On the eve of the sacrificial ceremony, he offered incense and prayed: “If Heaven would grant me a good omen, I will do anything, no matter how unreasonable.” During the grand ceremony, the emperor stood tall upon the altar. Suddenly, dark clouds gathered, thunder cracked and lightning flashed. The officials fell to their knees, crying out that this was a terrible omen. But then, the clouds broke open, and ten miles of golden light poured down. A magnificent ancient dragon, exactly like those in the ancestral portraits, soared from the sky and coiled around the emperor. The court was shaken to their core, bowing low and crying, “The True Dragon recognizes His Son of Heaven!” On the altar, Fu Chui thought of his prayer from the night before. He stared at the dragon before him, uncertain of its intentions. Then, in his mind, he suddenly heard a young voice: “I am the true dragon. A ninth-rank official position… that’s not too much to ask, right?” Fu Chui: “???” — Description from novelcodex.org
