Inari’s Gift

After decades of thankless work in a world they despise, a mage finds themselves no longer necessary. Seeking a new beginning, they prepare to sever their spirit and reshape it into a form they would enjoy. Before doing so, they ask permission of a greater being to take the form of one of its servants, and are instead offered the opportunity to truly become one, taking the place of another who had given up in a dangerous lesser realm. With permission, the body is changed more to the mage’s liking, and they transfer into it, suffering immense backlash in the process of moving between realms. Finally, however, it is time to begin anew, with the gift from Inari. Note: gender bender is irrelevant beyond the first handful of chapters, there is no intense changes, just a change and acceptance, but I know people would be upset if I didn't tag it that way.
