There is the event "weak protagonist" and "underestimated protagonist"So if he is weak he ain't underestimated right? So is the protagonist unlocking some power up and becoming some bad ass protgonst? the MC is weak and side character is the one with harem and if you think the MC well be strong and get the harem then you well be dissapointed cause untill now he is trash and this is japanese novel not chinase or korean mean the beta MC well always be beta Once a beta always a beta. And i can only assume that more things will be in japanese throughout the novel. (Naruto fanfics often do this with the jutsu.
