Stealing the Foster Bride

Synopsis: Yaozhen is the Meng family’s child bride. Her husband is rigid and aloof, while her mother-in-law is as fiery as a blaze. Because Yaozhen has given birth only to a daughter, her mother-in-law is constantly abusive toward her. Yaozhen cares for her husband, serves her mother-in-law, and raises her daughter, living a very difficult life. One day, her husband rescues a noble young master and brings him home. The two hit it off and become sworn brothers. That young master is strikingly beautiful, with an overwhelming air of nobility. He politely and distantly addresses her as “sister-in-law.” Yaozhen lowers her head and avoids his gaze, as though ashamed of her own plainness, thinking to herself: How can someone like this exist in the world? Her husband is busy with official duties, while the young master remains bedridden recovering from his injuries. Only Yaozhen is left to care for him together with her daughter. As the days pass, they inevitably have more and more contact. Later, her mother-in-law tells her that if she cannot give birth to a son, she will be divorced. She is a child bride with no family to return to. If she loses the protection of her husband’s family, her only possible fate is to be ravaged by bandits. Despairing, Yaozhen steels herself to hang herself, but at the brink of death, someone saves her. The person who rescues her carries the wonderfully soothing scent of sandalwood. Once, she had always anxiously kept her distance from him, but now she sobs uncontrollably in his arms. The young master strokes the ligature marks around her neck, furious that she would throw her life away yet pitying the impossible situation she is in. At last, he grits his teeth and whispers into her ear: “Isn’t it just a son? If he can’t give you one, I will.” — Description from novelcodex.org
