The Husband’s Regret

Song Xingyue was born of humble origins. Aside from a face that could pass as pretty, she had nothing else to boast of. Yet in the end, because she shared a night of intimacy with the heir of the Duke’s household, she married into the Duke Mansion and became the heir’s wife. Xie Linxu, noble by birth, striking in beauty, famed from a young age— he was the unattainable cold moon in the heavens, the unrivaled heir of the Duke Mansion. What should have been a perfect marriage was forced upon him, and after the wedding, he treated her with icy indifference. Life in a lofty household was far from easy. Song Xingyue knew he disliked her, yet she never let his coldness weigh on her heart. She kept greeting him with smiles, hoping that one day, after bearing him children, their days might finally warm. But on her birthday, he stayed the night at the home of the girl he had once been betrothed to. When she confronted him through tears, his reply was cool and detached: “Isn’t this what you wanted? If you can’t bear it, then divorce.” At those words, Song Xingyue’s last hope died. She knew they had no future. Xie Linxu, however, had long ago seen her flirt with another man before their marriage. He believed she was scheming and fickle. He thought that since she had fought so hard to marry into the Duke Mansion, she would never leave. But after that quarrel, she seemed to change. She still smiled—but never at him. She remained gentle—but only cold toward him. Until one spring banquet, when he saw her laughing brightly with another man. It had been so long since he’d seen that joy on her face. Returning home, they quarreled.
