THE MAN WHO CAME BEFORE HIMSELF
by azzatssins
Shu is a historical linguist and epigrapher specializing in the nearly forgotten civilization of Avarra, an ancient kingdom whose capital, Nereth, disappeared from history after a mysterious catastrophe known as the Night of Ashes. During the excavation of an untouched royal-era tomb beneath the ruins of Nereth, archaeologists discover the remains of an unidentified man. There is nothing remarkable about the burial at first. Until they find his name.Shu.The inscription is almost three thousand years old. Soon afterward, the excavation reveals increasingly impossible evidence: handwriting resembling Shu’s own, knowledge that should not have existed in ancient Avarra, and references to an unnamed foreign adviser who supposedly knew events before they occurred. Beneath the ruins lies an underground structure the research team calls the Meridian Chamber. During a rare convergence of tectonic activity, geomagnetic disturbance, and an extreme solar storm, Shu becomes trapped inside it. His watch begins moving backward. When he wakes, the ruins above him are gone. The city of Nereth is alive. And the Night of Ashes is still seven years away. Believing that his knowledge of history gives him the power to prevent the disaster, Shu begins interfering with the events he once studied. But the more history changes, the more it begins to resemble the history he already knows. Eventually, Shu discovers something far worse than predestination. The mysterious adviser recorded in ancient texts was not someone like him.It was him.And he was not the first Shu to discover this. — Description from novelcodex.org
