The NPC Marked for Deletion Is Rewriting the Main Quest
by LunaLoading
Every player in Starfall Epoch hates Mia Greylight. She is Grayharbor’s unskippable tutorial NPC: forty-seven safety checks, confiscated starter gear, and a perfectly courteous smile that survives every insult. Players burn her clothes to test the physics, use local workers as damage counters, and livestream increasingly ridiculous attempts to get past her. Then one of those exploits drops Mia behind the map, where she finds the confidential patch notes for Version 2.0. In seventy-two hours, Grayharbor will be destroyed for low player engagement. Its 23,074 residents will be erased. Mia has already been assigned a heroic scripted death to make the new storyline more exciting. Her only weapon is the Glitch Manual, a broken system artifact that can preserve exploits she personally discovers and reproduces. Each glitch lets her bend one existing rule. Each use also raises her Rollback Index. If it reaches one hundred percent, every unscripted memory she has made will disappear. To save a city the game insists is disposable, Mia must turn hostile mechanics into protection, player attention into public evidence, and scripted NPCs into people who can refuse the quests written for them. — Description from novelcodex.org
