My Name Carved in the Coffin
by 花大荣
I woke up in a coffin on a black river. The coffin was empty, but my name was carved on the inner wall. After going ashore, I entered a city—Yellow Spring City. There were 'people' in the city, but they weren't alive. They repeated the same actions like broken machines, their eyes hollow, oblivious to death. I saw someone being 'chosen' in the square, glowing and falling dead, but no one stopped. A man named Shen Wangchuan found me and said this was the afterlife judgment ground. Nine-day cycles, those whose fate ends have their memories wiped and start anew. He said I was lucky to have survived to the third day on my first visit. But on the stone tablet, my name was at the top. He said: the higher the name, the more cycles. My first visit? Then why was my name carved in the coffin?
