In 1996 rural eastern Sichuan, teenager Chen Mo secretly writes "Lin Xiao" all over his notebook in the flickering light of a kerosene lamp. From a glance back in the fourth row of the classroom, to the scent of rice paddies and evening wind on the back of a motorcycle; from silent breaths counted by the minute in a public phone booth, to the first hand-holding under the old locust tree on graduation night—this is a youth chronicle of staying behind, growing up, and saying goodbye. As the wave of migrant workers sweeps away the village's parents, as black-and-white TVs broadcast the brotherhood of Young and Dangerous, as VCDs and "rear-projection TVs" bring the temptations of the outside world, two teenagers clumsily and sincerely protect each other in an era of electrification, telephones, and motorcycles. Can the promise made three years later be kept? Will the vigil, transformed from kerosene lamp to electric light, illuminate their separate paths forward?
