I once searched between the lines of ancient texts for those forgotten details—not the legend of the Oath of the Peach Garden, nor the cunning stratagem of Borrowing Arrows with Straw Boats, but the struggles of ordinary people in chaotic times, the ambitions and helplessness of warlords, the perseverance and downfall of heroes. I have always wanted to write a book like this—neither alternate history nor farce, with official history as its backbone and details as its flesh, using the brush of fiction to restore a true and tangible late Han and Three Kingdoms era, so that this history can truly enter the daily lives of ordinary people, becoming a story that can be discussed, sighed over, and felt.
