In 1936, as the Spanish Popular Front won the parliamentary elections and took control of Spain, democracy seemed like a dream. The Spanish reactionaries launched a coup but were pushed back by the people, eventually retreating to Equatorial Guinea. However, German and Italian fascists extended their claws into Spain to test new weapons and pave the way for the ensuing catastrophic world war, supporting the rebel forces. The people's government began to retreat under fascist attacks, while Britain and France stood by, using appeasement to fuel fascist aggression. At this critical moment, people and governments with conscience around the world rushed to support the Spanish democratic government. A miracle for all humanity was about to unfold in Spain.
