In 1912, the first year of the Republic of China, the Lingnan region of Guangdong was in turmoil. The Qing dynasty had just fallen, and the new republic was in its infancy, with social upheaval during the transition. Warlords carved up the land, bandits ran rampant, and the people were displaced. The order of the yin and yang realms collapsed, and demons and monsters rose to power. Tengteng Town, a key town in Lingnan, saw its entire population die overnight a decade ago, turning into a corpse town and being declared a forbidden zone by the authorities. For a hundred miles around, a terrifying ballad spread: 'Tengteng Town, ghosts knock at the door; the living enter, but the dead come out.'
